Ophthalmology Services We Provide
We provide complete medical and surgical treatment of eye disease in small animals
(dogs and cats) as well as large animals (horses) and exotic pets.

Kent Burgesser
PhD, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVO
Dr. Burgesser earned his PhD
in immunology from the University of Denver in 1989.
He earned his DVM degree from
Colorado State University in 1993. Dr. Burgesser completed his residency in veterinary and
comparative ophthalmology at Colorado State University in 1998, where he also earned
a Masters degree in Clinical Sciences.
He received board certification from the
American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 2000.
Dr. Burgesser was previously a clinical
instructor in ophthalmology at the Ontario Veterinary College, and practiced ophthalmology
in south Florida before joining Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Services. He
is also the hospital director of the facility.

Additionally,
we provide eye certification examinations to evaluate for possible
inherited
eye disease in breeding dogs (
CERF exams).
The ophthalmology service at Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service is dedicated
to providing the highest quality of care for animals with eye disease. We strive
to enhance the quality of life by helping to improve your pet’s vision if possible,
as well as to relieve discomfort from painful eye diseases. We also provide information
about inherited eye disease in animals.

We have a dedicated ophthalmology examination room equipped with the all the
instruments to evaluate the eye and associated structures. These include slit lamp
biomicroscopy (to examine the cornea and lens), indirect and direct ophthalmoscopy
(examination of the retina), tonometry (measurement of intraocular pressure to evaluate
for glaucoma), gonioscopy (evaluation of glaucoma) and
Dr. Burgesser examines a
patient’s retina using an
indirect headset and
handheld lens. electroretinography (to evaluate
retinal function). Ultrasound evaluation of the eye is also available. A dedicated
surgery suite is equipped with an operating microscope, phacoemulsification unit
(for cataract surgery), diode laser and specialized microsurgical instruments.
Scheduling a Consultation
Consultations are scheduled Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to 6:00
pm, and every other Saturday from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Elective surgeries are
performed on Thursdays. Emergencies are seen as needed.
