Cancer in Veterinary Patients

Cancer is the number one cause of death in older dogs and cats and is therefore a major area of concern for pet owners. However, recent advances in the treatment of cancer in veterinary patients have opened up a number of options for our clients and our patients. Throughout these advances, surgery remains an essential component of treatment for most types of cancer.
Our veterinary surgeons have received special training in the principles and practices of oncologic (cancer) surgery, as well as the reconstructive procedures that are often required after removal of large tumors. More importantly, we care about you and your pet and are therefore able to assist you in making plans that will maximize their quality of life. Making the decision to pursue surgery for treatment of cancer can be difficult or stressful – particularly when we have personal experience with cancer in our own families.
The information in this section may provide some help in familiarizing pet owners with the process of cancer treatment and with some of the advanced methods that are available at Veterinary Specialists of Rochester.
